Artist Residency
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide emerging and established artists a serene environment for creative exploration that is inspired by living in nature and is reflected in the art practice. Our goal is to support committed artists whose work corresponds with nature and is connected to place.
Before the sculptor J.B. Blunk died in 2002 he asked that his home and studio continue to be filled with life and creativity. In the spirit of the artist himself and his request the J.B. Blunk Residency has been established to provide a sanctuary for creative growth, exploration and production.
Set in the midst of the Bishop Pine Nature Preserve in Inverness, California the J.B. Blunk Residency offers a home, studio and outdoor clearings for work. The home and studio, built by J.B. Blunk in 1959, with salvaged materials, suggest a certain lifestyle that is independent, sustainable and closely connected to the landscape. Because of J.B.’s profound connection to the surrounding environment the hope is that the residency program will foster work inspired by the site.
The J.B. Blunk Residency (here after called Residency) is a program of the Lucid Art Foundation, a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Lucid Art’s vision is to support artists who are committed to living in harmony with nature and have dedicated their lives to creating works of art that are in deeper relation to the self and nature. The Residency invites emerging and established artists to apply whose works falls within the following categories:
- Painting
- Drawing
- Photography
- Installation
- Creative Writing
- Multimedia
- Mixed media
- Video
- Artist Books
- Sculpture
- Woodwork
- Music
Specifically, the Residency encourages artists to apply who are interested in pursuing creative endeavors that relate to, or are informed by, their surrounding environment. The Residency program is interested in work that is inspired by the mystery of artistic process, involves material exploration and is concerned with sustainability.
The artist is invited to live and work, uninterrupted, for two months in the house and studio of J.B. Blunk.
There is a stipend provided each month for the artist.
There will be two studio visits and artist talks during each artists stay.
Each artist must donate one to three pieces to the Residency program for the annual fundraising exhibition. The number of pieces donated by each artist will depend on the scale and medium of the work.
Four artists are invited to participate each year for two months.
- First artist – January and February - WINTER
- Second Artist – April and May - SPRING
- Third Artist – July and August - SUMMER
- Fourth Artist – October and November - FALL
These dates will vary depending on accepted artists schedules.
A committee of established artists, teachers and art administrators, selected by the Lucid Art Foundation, reviews the artists’ applications. Awards will be based on the quality of the work and the artist’s intent. The committee looks closely at the applicant’s proposal and previous work/art experience. The deadline for applications for 2011 is August 13th, 2010. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by September 13th, 2010. Former artists in residence must wait five years to re-apply.
